The Importance of Team Bonding and 5 Ways to Achieve It

We’ve all heard the phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work”, and in a work culture that is becoming increasingly dependent on interdisciplinary team collaborations, it’s crucial to understand how to ensure that your dream doesn’t crumble into a nightmare.

The Harvard Business Review also mentions that meaningful interactions between coworkers contribute greatly to the success of not just the team, but the company as a whole. Here are some methods you can adopt to maintain a healthy, supportive team spirit at your job:

  1. Conduct ice-breaker activities with your team. Possibly the most effective start to a great working relationship with your collaborators is getting to know them and letting them get to know you. These ice-breakers can come in many different forms, and don’t have to be time-consuming. Consider light-hearted subjects such as favourite food or music genre, or maybe even find out who likes pineapple on pizza. Sharing sessions also make for great icebreakers: try having a category for each week — from pictures of your pets or messy desks, favourite GIFs or quotes, to how everyone spent their weekend.

2. Team lunches are another great way to encourage conversations to occur naturally among colleagues. So what’s a good place for lunch? We’ve got some solutions to the dreaded answer of “anything” or “anywhere”. Marina Bay Link Mall is home to a wide array of eateries for everyone’s cravings and preferences. Wrap this year up and celebrate all your efforts through this year with a cozy team meal for five with a choice of cuisines from around the globe, including OLA Cocina del Mar (MBFC Tower 3, #01-05) for a touch of Spain, Copper Chimney (MBLM #02-06) for some Indian spice, as well as Qi – House of Sichuan (MBLM, Ground Plaza, #02-01) or Forbidden Duck (MBLM, Ground Plaza, #02-02) for a rich blend of Chinese cuisine. 3. Be transparent about your schedule, workflow and any problems you may have. Understanding each other’s working styles and habits gives everyone an idea of how you can work together in order to navigate trials and challenges more efficiently. Letting your teammates know about any limitations or commitments beforehand also lets everyone know how they can cover for you at work if need be.

4. Express your gratitude — even for your shortcomings. A positive outlook goes a long way in upkeeping relationships and morale within the team. For instance:

Instead of “Sorry for rambling,” try “Thanks for listening.”
Instead of “Sorry to keep you waiting,” try “Thanks for being patient with me.”

Notice the change in tone and perspective? Saying “thank you” shows our teammates that their efforts are seen and appreciated, and changes our perception of unpleasant events for the better. Being thankful for mishaps also motivates everyone to learn from them and to do better the next time around.

5. Peer reviews on work performance and personal well-being can influence a better functioning team chemistry and encourage coworkers to look out for each other, so no one feels left behind. Even a simple “How are you today?” can make a huge difference in creating a sense of inclusion, and is a great way for team members to let the rest know if they require some space or moral support.
